Volunteer Opportunities

Some of the many Ontario Chapter volunteersWe are unique amongst national and international environmental organizations in that volunteers are truly us. Our volunteers head committees and campaigns, partake in research, teaching and advocacy, and participate in events. Numerous opportunities exist to make a difference while learning valuable skills through practical experience.

Volunteering opportunities with the Ontario Chapter of the Sierra Club of Canada tend to be local or general (often spanning several local sites). Prospective volunteers are requested to become members of the Sierra Club. If you're not a member yet, please become a member! Every member, active or not, is a valuable and powerful addition to Sierra Club of Canada.

Local Group Opportunities

Please let us know what your interests are! Call the Ontario Chapter office at (416) 960-9606 for more information on what you can do to protect Ontario's environment.

Most volunteer activity at the Chapter level occurs in the Greater Toronto Area. However, with the exception of the EcoCertification Program, we are able to integrate some people outside of Toronto into our Chapter activities so long as you have internet and phone access. Let us know if you have an interest in participating in any of the below no matter where you live in the province. You can directly contact volunteers below by email or call the Chapter Office at 416-960-9606.

Current Campaign Openings
Forests and Wildlife

Chair: Emma Cane (staff)
Email: emmac@sierraclub.ca

The Forests and Wildlife campaign is focused on informing the public about the ecological and social value of forests. The group represents Sierra Club Ontario in local media and publications seeking information on the forestry industry in Ontario, Wildlife conservation and management, Aboriginal forest values, conserving Boreal lands, clearcutting and sustained yield timber harvesting.

Waste Diversion

Chair: Rod Muir
Email: rodmuir@sympatico.ca

Reduce, reuse, and recycle is the focus of this campaign. The 3 R's are crucial for reducing carbon dioxide emissions as part of Canada's One Tonne Challenge and the international Kyoto Accord. Although largely Toronto based until recently, the Waste Diversion campaign with the help of volunteers like you is expanding across the province.

Coal Fire Plant Phase Out

Email: dmcd@sierraclub.ca
The Ontario government has committed to shutting these polluters down.

Dan McDermott, our Chapter Director, is striving to ensure that this becomes a reality. To be of assistance with this important campaign a prospective volunteer must be highly informed about coal fire plant regulation and policy and have some relevant practical experience.

Green Energy

Chair: Christine Elwell
Email: christine.elwell@sympatico.ca

Fossil fuels must steadily and gradually be replaced with cleaner and greener sources of renewable energy. This campaign promotes sources of energy that we can all breath easy with. While specific events may require volunteers, this campaign is typically limited to a few highly knowledgable green energy volunteers.

Car Free Days

Chair: Emma Cane(staff)
Email: emmac@sierraclub.ca
Car Free Day is Toronto's biggest celebration event for sustainable transportation. This year, CFD takes place between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Yonge-Dundas Square, with Yonge Street closed between Dundas and Shuter Streets for a range of exhibits and attractions focusing on sustainable transportation in Toronto. Sierra Club Ontario is partnered with the City of Toronto's Environment Office to deliver this one-of-a-kind street festival. Major sponsors for Car Free Day 2009 include The Ontario Government, Toronto Hydro, The Toronto Transit Commission, SmartCommute, The Ontario Trillium Foundation, and Pirate. Media sponsorship is generously provided by Citytv. To learn more about this campaign and to find out about how you can volunteer please visit

Pickering Airport/Duffins Creek

Chair: Bernadette Zubrisky
Email: bernadette_zubrisky@edu.yorku.ca

Land in North Pickering was expropriated during the 1970's to be used as an airport. The plans were contested from the start and citizens blocked the original proposal. Now, thirty years later the issue has resurfaced. This time it is not only the lands at risk but the last remaining undeveloped habitat to many species. Also at stake is the future of an entire watershed, Duffins Creek, history and class one agricultural soils.
